Sylvan Learning Center

by Drew Baird

A Helping Hand: Sylvan Learning Center has been providing students across South Jersey with the personal and individual care they need.

Every parent knows how unique and special their child is. After all, no two people are ever the same. And when it comes to education, no two students experience the learning process in the same way and at the same speed. That’s why parents have been turning to the individualized tutoring care at Sylvan Learning Center in Marlton for more than 15 years when their child needs that one-on-one help.

Sylvan Learning Center provides the quality of its 30-year-old national chain with the personal service that comes with being a local staple in the South Jersey community. With tutoring available from elementary-aged to high school students, the state-certified teachers, education and center directors employed at Sylvan—all local residents themselves—offer in-depth programs for all levels of learning.

Sylvan’s goal is to establish a learning pattern for their students so that when the lesson is over, each student has a foundation to work with away from their tutor. It also works to meet the standards of modern education. The curriculum aligns with the New Jersey state school curriculum, as well as NJ ASK for third- through eighth-graders, meaning each Sylvan experience will be a necessary and vital part of a student’s growth in school. And with sub-programs offered in math, reading, writing and study skills, along with designated tutoring for New Jersey state testing, SAT/ACT prep and college prep, no student is ever without help.

You won’t find the perks of Sylvan at a private tutor. Each student starts with their own tutor who creates a customized teaching plan based on a Sylvan Skill Assessment test done, and determines what grade level a child is learning at before tutoring begins. From there, the student, tutor and parents work together to locate trouble areas in their studies and reach results. Unlike local competitors, Marlton’s Sylvan is state approved for providing supplemental education, meaning they are meeting a state standard that expands well beyond typical tutoring.

Sylvan urges you to get to know the program for what it is: a place of local pride and high expectations. Just visit the Marlton website, which provides detailed bios of every tutor and staff member for prospective students and their parents to read up on. The learning center also runs educational events at their location as well as throughout the community while constantly trying to stay in touch with the area through various promotions and programs. Also available online is countless “success stories” from past students and their happy parents, praising the experience and the outcome for all ages of Sylvan learners. “I’ve seen instant results with my child,” says one happy local mother.

“My son is reading better and at times doesn’t want to stop reading. Whereas before, it was a fight to even start a book.”

Coming soon to the learning center is Sylvan Sync, a new way to combine your child’s digital knowledge with their learning experience. Each student is issued an iPad, and each teacher formats their lesson plan to engage students digitally through the tablet. This means students are experiencing their education through a familiar source, and working at a pace that is comfortable to their own learning plan. Students and parents can also access their tutoring plan at any time through the new mySylvan website, which monitors all progression and assignments. Logging on grants viewers access to a handful of additional resources for those times when a night of homework or an upcoming project require a little bit of help.

At Sylvan, parental involvement is a necessity in the student-tutor experience. Tutors run ongoing conferences with the designated parent or guardian after every 10 hours to serve as an update into their child’s progress and to pinpoint a future direction in the student’s educational path.

Parents can feel safe knowing their student’s education is in the best hands possible as they continue to grow: That’s the Sylvan Guarantee. The national company guarantees that “your child’s math or reading skills will improve by one full grade equivalent in only 36 hours of instruction,” and the Marlton location is no different. Sylvan guarantees 12 hours of free instruction if that mark isn’t met. And while the reward for a parent lies in a Sylvan student’s stronger grades and improved report cards, the team at Sylvan knows that most kids need a little extra incentive. That’s why students work to earn reward tokens that can be used at Sylvan’s store inside the learning center.

No matter the goal, the results are still the same: a happier child and parent, and a few new grades to stick on the fridge.
