Star Citizens: October, 2012

by Editorial Staff, Suburban Family magazine

Kayla Memis (pictured)
Harrison Township
Though just a freshman at Clearview, Memis already has a reputation of being a student advocate. As the big sister to a child with a disability, she campaigned at Clearview Middle School to abolish the “R” word and made a presentation to teachers and faculty to encourage zero tolerance for the word. Very active in Buddy Walks (which raise funds for Down syndrome awareness programs), Memis most recently helped start the Harrison Township TOPSoccer program this summer, which provides athletes with disabilities the chance to hit the field. Memis has acted as a cheerleader for this program, both by encouraging the athletes and helping recruit volunteers. Though they only expected four to 10 athletes the first season, 33 signed up.

Dan and Dave Adams, Kevin McCullough and Kevin Collins
Washington Township
This team of friends and self-taught chefs, known collectively as K2D2, garnered enough votes for the first-place honor at Washington Township’s first-ever Chili Cook Off with their no-beans Texas-style chili. Proceeds from the charity event will go toward preserving the house at Olde Stone Village.

Ava Jolie Savino
Moorestown
It didn’t take long for this 7-year-old to take home her first pageant win. Moorestown Friends School student Ava Jolie Savino topped her division at the National American Miss New Jersey Junior Pre-Teen pageant in East Brunswick. A rookie to pageants, Savino earned herself a trip to California to compete against 50-60 other girls from across the country, along with $1,000 and two tickets to Disneyland.

Medford Girl Scouts
Medford
A Guinness World Record was broken when 378 Girl Scouts from several troops in Medford, organized by Troop Leader Amy Stern, joined together at Freedom Park to simultaneously blow out birthday candles in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts organization. The event was held earlier this year, but Stern just found out in September that the girls broke the record previously set in 2011.

Bianca Agnes
Washington Township
Beating out 123 other contestants, Bianca Agnes is the winner in her age group of the National American Miss New Jersey Junior Pre-Teen Queen. At the young age of 10, this was her first time competing and she’ll now go on to California for the national title. The Birches Elementary student is taught confidence and question answering skills from her coach.

Ptl. Robert Shreve
Haddonfield
Shreve, being the first to arrive at the scene of a medical emergency on Euclid Avenue, helped revive a landscaper who suffered a cardiac emergency while on the job. Shreve used an automatic external defibrillator, showing all too well the importance of these life-saving devices.

Peyton Conrey
Moorestown
This 18-year-old was a part of the unveiling of a new room at the Ronald McDonald House of Camden recently. Conrey understands long hospital stays because she battled a heart defect and serious brain injury as a child. She is now the student director of the Ronald McDonald House Teen Advisory Council.

David Silver
Marlton
A new organization has emerged welcoming home soldiers, Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey, run by Marlton’s Silver. Before taking charge of the group, he was a volunteer for the original organization, the Yellow Ribbon Club, which started seven years ago and recently ended. In order to the keep the mission going strong, Silver and other volunteers came together to create the new group.

Lou Faiola
Cherry Hill
Owner of Cherry Hill’s School of Rock, Lou Faiola, teamed up with reality TV producer Steve Holtzman to form Bands of Brothers, an online reality TV show aiming to raise awareness for soldiers with PTSD. The show airs through November and brings together 12 veterans in three separate bands to perform in an effort to help treat vets with PTSD.

Cecelia and Tom Nicolosi
Haddonfield
Cecelia and Tom Nicolosi of Haddonfield won the Travel Channel’s “Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America” competition with a sandwich containing roast pork, provolone cheese and broccoli rabe. Their restaurant, DiNic’s, is located in Philadelphia.

Alan Cohen
Voorhees
As the owner of The Tutoring Club of Cherry Hill/Voorhees, Cohen recently held a fundraising event in which students could come in and take a full-length practice SAT or ACT exam to help them prepare for college. The proceeds raised, $625, was then donated to the Eastern High School’s theater booster club to help students with their productions.

Jacki Radano
Mount Laurel
Radano was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 49, but she has now been cancer free for 11 years. To give back, she is the co-captain of a dragon boat team, consisting of breast cancer survivors supporting one another and leading each other toward healthy active lifestyles, that practices on the Cooper River.
