by Samuel Naumick

Call it a hoagie, call it a sub: However you slice it, we love sandwiches. They’re family-friendly meals on the go, and our area has become more than famous for a stellar selection. We’ve highlighted our 10 favorite sandwiches around South Jersey—from the classic to the weird and wonderful—for you to try next time you’re out and about.

Pastrami Reuben (pictured)
The Kibitz Room, Cherry Hill

Size certainly matters at this traditional New York style Jewish deli with portions that will always leave you more than satisfied. The Kibitz Reuben serves up a classic with a pile of succulent pastrami slices on crispy grilled rye, sharp Swiss cheese and a finishing touch of zesty Russian dressing.

Anthony Pretzel Sandwich
Marie’s Sandwich Bar, Haddonfield

Start with a soft, salty pretzel bun and pile on slow-cooked pulled chicken. Then add provolone cheese, a house-made barbecue sauce and shoe string onions for a sandwich that’s fully loaded with tangy, hearty and smoky flavors.

Hot Roast Beef
Dad’s Deli & Catering, Marlton

Make it a special at Dad’s for an unforgettable sandwich experience—perfectly roasted hot roast beef on a soft Kaiser roll with melted cheddar cheese and sliced tomato. Fresh Russian dressing coleslaw gives you that extra mile in flavor and texture when you put it on top of your sandwich.

Open Face Roast Turkey
Rode’s Fireside Restaurant & Tavern, Swedesboro

A Thanksgiving meal served on sourdough bread—this sandwich will leave you in the holiday spirit all year long. Sliced turkey is served on a bed of homemade stuffing, topped with American cheese and smothered in mouthwatering gravy. Served with mashed potatoes, coleslaw and cranberry sauce, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Prosciutto Mozzarella Panini
Passariello’s Pizzeria, Voorhees and Moorestown

Salty tender prosciutto gets sliced thin and piled with fresh mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers and a herbaceous pesto sauce, then pressed and served hot and crispy. It’s a simple combination, but one that allows every indulgent ingredient to truly shine.

Famous Hot Roast Pork
Abbruzzi and Giunta’s, Mount Laurel

Roast pork sandwiches are a tried and true tradition in our area, and Abbruzzi and Giunta’s delivers with their take on the classic. Roast pork is sliced and served on a hoagie roll, served with sharp provolone cheese and sweet roasted peppers. It’s a familiar local favorite that never ceases to please.

Portobello Cheesesteak
Harvest, Moorestown

Who says vegetarian sandwiches can’t be hearty too? At Harvest, Portobello mushrooms are paired with caramelized onions, roasted peppers, a sun-dried tomato vinaigrette and topped with locally sourced organic Hope Springs Farm’s melted white cheddar cheese—served on a long toasted hoagie roll.

Grilled Pesto Chicken
Zinc Café, Medford

Premium grilled chicken is seasoned with a house-made pesto sauce and paired with roasted red peppers. It all gets topped with smoked mozzarella, which adds a salty and delightfully smoky finish to each bite.

Fried Flounder Sandwich
Max’s Seafood Café, Gloucester City

Treat yourself to the lunch menu at Max’s and on it you will find your next favorite sandwich. Succulent flounder is breaded and fried, served with lettuce, tomato and a chef-made mango tartar sauce on a buttery brioche roll.

NY Strip Sandwich

Tender choice cut USDA strip steak sits on a torpedo roll, topped with sautéed onions, sharp provolone cheese and finished off with mushroom gravy. Consider this an elevated take on everyone’s favorite cheesesteak.
